Forestation

Currently, it’s estimated that forests absorb between 25-30% of CO2 emissions. While the total amount of land covered with the forest has grown over the past decade in many countries, we’re still experiencing a net loss of trees. According to Global Forest Watch, there was a total of 437Mha of tree cover loss from 2001-2021, equivalent to an 11% decrease. Had these trees not been eliminated, they would have sequestered an estimated 176Gt of CO2!

Against this backdrop, it’s clear that preventing deforestation and investing in reforestation is paramount for several reasons:

Reduce the impact of climate change: Trees are the most scalable and cost-efficient way to reduce CO2, with each mature tree absorbing an estimated 48 lbs of CO2 per year. That means that an acre of trees has the potential to absorb approximately 26,000 miles worth of CO2 emissions from a gas-powered car!

Cleaner Air: In Addition to sequestering CO2, trees help clean the air by absorbing pollutants. Improvements in air quality are associated with better overall well-being and fewer respiratory-related illnesses!

Cleaner Soil and Water / Enhanced Biodiversity: Tree roots hold the soil together, helping to protect our waterways by preventing erosion and associated runoff. Trees also keep the soil moist and fertile, helping plants and animals in the surrounding area thrive!

Create Jobs: The ecosystem around forests has added economic benefits for communities that depend on forest goods for their livelihood!
